First Weekend May 3-4, 2013 : Teri Jo Summer to present a special Trunk Show at Artworks Gallery May 3 & 4. Artworks Gallery will feature Fiber Artist Teri Jo Summer during May. Her exhibit will open with a Trunk Show on Friday, May 3 from 11 AM - 8 PM before and during Artworks First Friday reception (5 - 8 PM). This special event trunk show will continue Saturday, May 4 from 11-7, so please come by for personal attention from Teri Jo. Friday evening there will be light snacks and beverages. Other Artworks Gallery artists will be on hand to greet visitors. Quinn Fitzpatrick will be providing musical entertainment. This is a chance to see Teri Jo’s unique apparel which has evolved over the years. Through experimentation Teri Jo has generated a luxury wearable art as well as pieces featured in museums exhibits. She says, “Today my inspiration lies in balancing elements of elegance for living in a practical context. I find great satisfaction in making unique apparel for every day.” These fabric creations are not only available to fashionable women of the Northwest. Teri Jo’s patrons include Karly Simon, Goldie Hawn, Aretha Franklin, Jane Fonda, Oprah, Mick Jagger, Maya Angelou, Dame Judi Dench, and many more. People have written, “I feel so beautiful in the clothing you make; there’s something about what you infuse into your pieces that makes me feel at ease, powerful and truly myself.” These one of a kind pieces, are designed, dyed, sewn and embellished by Teri Jo at Shining Sea Studios overlooking Honeymoon Bay, on Whidbey Island.

Artworks Gallery is a co-operative enterprise of Whidbey Island artists working in a variety of media. At Artworks Gallery you’ll find a lively and inviting display that changes on a regular basis. Art in the gallery is the product of juried selection and is produced at the highest standards of quality -- the primary reason that Artworks has attracted a loyal, and geographically diverse, customer base.

Visitors to Greenbank Farm will find a wonderful combination of good art (multiple galleries), good food (an excellent café and cheese shop) and good wine (a fun tasting room/retail shop), all in a setting of exceptional scenic beauty.

Artworks Gallery is open every day during the summer months (May through September) 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and offers a First Friday reception, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. During the winter months our hours are 10:00 to 5:00 on the weekends and 11:00 to 4:00 during the week, closing on Tuesdays. The gallery is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.

Galleries

Judith Burns : Inspiration for my work comes from a variety of sources. Working from photographs of my travels or the gardens of homes where I’ve lived, or from my imagination, nature plays a constant role in my work with organic shapes, color palettes and sense of naturalized arrangement. My career as a musician and composer also weaves through the composition bringing melodic and rhythmic motion. These elements give me a unique way to express my varied experiences through my work. I hope the viewer will feel a connection to the compositions and if they have traveled in these places, attended these activities, or heard the melody from a favorite song - they will serve as a memoir. Gaylen Whiteman : Gaylen Whiteman has been drawing and painting since her childhood. She primarily paints in watercolor, with occasional forays into other mediums. Her subjects vary, but she is drawn to the natural world, the beauty of sun and moonlight, flowers and landscapes, animals, and people. When she is not painting in her studio, you may find her gathering painting ideas on the beaches and forests near her home on Whidbey Island. The artist often works from a combination of reference photos and her own memory and imagination, preferring to blend impressionistic realism with fantasy and often humor. “I love it when I suddenly visualize a work – it energizes me and I may lay awake all night planning the process in my head, anxious to start on it in my studio. I’m never quite sure what I will end up with, and that unknown adds mystery and magic to my creation.” Gaylen enjoys the challenge of commission work. John Olsen : A transplant to the Northwest in 2007, John has photographed widely in Asia, Europe and Mexico, as well as in his long-term home state of New Mexico. He works in all camera formats, but favors infrared or high-speed B&W films for interpretive images. His current photographic work at the gallery is from his "Industrial Glamour" series, featuring landmark motorcycles of the early 20th Century. Other work available in the unframed print racks include scenic views of Whidbey island and his historic automotive series from New Mexico and Washington State. John has six years experience as a commercial photographer in New Mexico and Colorado, doing mostly architectural and product work. Over the last 28 years he has installed ten darkrooms for himself, and persists in preferring film over digital, hand-printing over ink jetting. While acknowledging that the visual distinction between the two approaches is getting extremely fine, he still prefers a hands-on relation with his images. Marcy Johnson : Marcy Johnson is the creator, owner and operator of Weaving Works, Seattle, WA, a retail store providing equipment, supplies and classes for hand weavers, knitters, basket and paper makers, bookbinders and others since 1974. She writes: "I am an instructor of weaving, knitting, basketry, bookbinding, and papermaking. I love the experience of working with adults and children. I have been artist in residence in many schools in the Seattle area teaching weaving basketry and jewelry. In the past few years I focused on a line of production hand woven scarves and rag rugs. Going back to some great skill I acquired in high school, I also have a line of hand-pounded, ethnic-inspired jewelry. All of these items are represented in Pacific Northwest galleries. I have had the opportunity to study with many important artisans, such as Martha Weatherbee, John McGuire, Shereen La Plants, Vi Philips, Virginia Harvey, Flo Hoppe, and paper makers in Japan My travels, which have focused on my fiber art skills of weaving, paper making and basketry have led me to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Hawaii, Guatemala, South America, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Japan, China, England and throughout Europe. From the 1970s to today I have enjoyed creating items for juried exhibits in the US and other countries. As opposed to my production work, my creative focus has been on bookbinding and contemporary basketry. My current work featuring hog casing and has received many awards. Having such a focused interest in fiber arts over the years has given me the enthusiasm and time to travel to many countries studying weaving, basketry and papermaking. Maggie Lancaster : The love of fabrics and rich colors has brought Maggie to the place in her life where she shapes and enfolds them in all her work. Sometimes she is forming wool fabric into braided rugs and sometimes she is hand dying a length of silk fabric. These richly colored fabrics are turned into banners, scarves and pillows. John Ursillo : John's preferred media are: water-soluble oil and colored pencil. Recently his colored pencil piece, "The Venture", on display at the Artworks Gallery, was selected for the prestigious Colored Pencil Society of America’s (CPSA) International Juried Exhibition. His work is written up in the Fall 2010 edition of "To the Point", the quarterly Journal of the CPSA. As a "colorist" at heart, John makes paintings that have been critically noted for their ability to render light, giving them an almost palpable sense of time, realism, depth, and volume. His paintings rely on strong composition and design...tonal contrasts...and subtle atmospheric perspective techniques learned from his teachers…among whom he counts his earliest mentor, Laura Grande; his friend the popular Western artist, Michael Ohm Untiedt; and masters Joseph Mendez and Frank LaLumia. Love of light is John’s inspiration. He tries to bring how he sees a subject to the viewer…not merely a representation of the things themselves. Much like the first Impressionists - not just the "what" but the "why" of a subject. John says, “My motivation stems from the wonder and infinity of design in Creation as made visible by the light all around me. There is wonder in the smallest things...the minute blossom of a wildflower or the grain in a weathered tree trunk...the slanting light of an August early morning. It's ALL about the light". His latest work has him reaching back to his New England roots as he creates pieces having to do with the nautical environment of Whidbey Island and the Sound. Marie Plakos : My love of photography began many years ago when I purchased my first 35mm camera. At that time, most photography was in black and white. I set up a processing lab in my bathroom and developed and printed my own film. When digital cameras came into the market I became interested in the process and the equipment. In creating photos, I have been inspired by nature and indigenous cultures around the world. My affinity for seeking spiritual connections has led me to seek and capture the beauty in flowers and breathtaking landscapes as well as the animals of Africa and indigenous peoples in Africa and Asia. I am constantly amazed with Mother Earth and her inhabitants and strive to capture glimpses of that beauty through the medium of photography. Dottie Sanders : Growing up in New York, Sanders was surrounded by many art forms and lucky enough to have an art teacher in her school. As she chose “what I want to do with my life”, she knew it would be teaching in the arts. As a college graduate with degrees in art education Sanders taught in the New York State schools until moving to Nome. While in Alaska Dottie found a wealth of opportunities to paint and travel. She also learned to teach writing, jewelry and silver fabrication, drama, literature and to synthesize art into classroom and life experiences. Kent Sanders : Having recently retired as a physics/chemistry teacher in Alaska, my wife and I moved to Oak Harbor four years ago and built a house on the north end of the island. My wife taught art and jewelry for over 30 years and I used to visit her jewelry classes often to see what her students were doing. I caught the bug by the time I retired and decided to go to jewelry school in Portland. In the last four years I have tried my hand at a wide variety of media and techniques, particularly enjoying the lost wax technique and fabrication, using both gold and sterling silver. Fluidity and kinetics are my major themes and each piece is original and unique. For the last 25 years I have mined for gold underwater in the Bering Sea off the coast of Nome, Alaska. If the sea is too rough to dive, I walk the beaches of Nome collecting beach glass. I use the gold and beach glass in my jewelry.

Johnathan & Jandellyn Ward : Jandellyn writes "As artists, we strive to design and create functional art pieces for the home and garden. We create our pieces from new and recycled steel, which we cut, grind, and form into components that we weld together. Our medium is not limited to steel, but it is our primary focus. We also incorporate aluminum, copper, stainless and brass into our works as well as fused glass and cast cement components that we design. We have been participating in art and garden shows since 1997 when Johnathan decided to start this adventure. I have always been a part of the process, but decided in 2004 that it was time for me to give up my day job and join him full time. We are art vendors at approximately 25 festivals a year from Mount Vernon to Sisters Oregon as far east as Boise Idaho. Johnathan grew up with a family of artists. His dad, when John was young, made wooden toys and participated in a similar art festival circuit that we do, so John was growing up in the same artist world that our 2 children (4 yrs., and 10 mos.) are now experiencing. I grew up with a family of seamstresses. My mother and my grandmother, from when I was really young, has always sewn. My mother taught me a lot about designing and building works of art from fabrics. I went to festivals with her until I graduated high school. We currently have our works in 5 galleries in the Pacific Northwest."

Barbara Mearing : Having played in art since childhood, Barbara absorbed the basics of art in evening classes and through reading. She spent years observing the world around her and learning to see the beauty we all share. Since retirement in 2009, she has taken classes and workshops with able and talented artists and has had the opportunity and pleasure of being able to continue learning and painting almost full time. She has chosen to work in pastels, a dry but luminous medium applied from a compressed stick of pigment and also creates miniature paintings in acrylic. These materials have qualities that allow her to work at a pace that is for her, the most pleasurable. She say she “paints for the simple pleasure of it, or as the song says to ‘fill up my senses’. My subjects are ordinary things - simple objects, flowers, local scenes - and serendipitous, suddenly seeing that the scene in front of me is beautiful! Dale Reiger : Dale Reiger was born in Seattle, Washington. Most of his life has been spent in the Northwest. Early on, Dale was inspired by creative pursuits. For many years his artistic focus centered on writing... fiction, plays and poetry. Over twenty years ago, Dale started abstract painting. After selling his successful export company in 1998, he devoted his full attention to working in his studio, world travel and philanthropic activities. In 2005 he began working with glass. He has exhibited in various northwest galleries, the Museum of Northwest Art and the Bellevue Art Museum. He has also completed several corporate commissions. He currently lives on Honeymoon Bay on Whidbey Island with his fabric artist/clothes designer wife, Teri Jo Summer-Reiger. Dale is creating works that embrace both primitive and elegant elements. His kiln-formed glass combines high temperatures with the heat of creativity. He fuses, combs, slumps and casts glass in a variety of shapes and designs, including sculptures, bowls, plates and tables. Call For Artists : Artworks Gallery always welcomes inquiries from prospective members. Space is limited, of course, and we try to avoid duplication of styles or subject matter, but talk to us if you might be interested. Artworks is an artist co-operative; we’re helping each other advance our respective art careers in a friendly and mutually beneficial atmosphere. If you “play well with others,” give us a thought. First, our terms: Members work the gallery two or three days per month and should feel comfortable in a retail setting. (We provide training in our rather simple business processes, so this is not a high hurdle.) Work schedules are set a month in advance with consideration, to the best of our ability, of members’ other obligations. Members pay dues of $65 per month and the gallery takes a 15% commission on sales. Members sign an annual contract, which may be voided by paying a two-month penalty, hardship cases excepted. Members should attend organizing meetings, display-rotation sessions, and take responsibility for some aspect of gallery operations from time-to-time. Second, the application process: Visit the gallery and pick up an application form. Chat with a gallery member and consider a typical display area. Then fill out the application and drop it off with three (3) show-ready pieces that are typical of your work. Our standards specify archival mats, professional quality framing and similar qualities for 3D work. We will set up an interview with the full membership. This will be your opportunity to explain your technique, ask about the way the gallery operates, and size us up as a group. There is a $135 initiation fee upon joining the gallery.

Marcia Muchnick : Marcia, originally from Plymouth Massachusetts area, made her way across the United States before finding Whidbey Island. Now, she says, her pilgrimage is over. She’s home. She has always had an artistic bent, but Marcia says she’s found her calling in designing functional pottery for everyday use. She began taking pottery classes in 2010 during rehab for an injury. Working with Bruning Pottery in Snohomish, Wa., Marcia turned a setback into a business. Her Pilgrimage Pottery line includes hand-thrown mugs, bowls, platters, pots and vases. She’s particularly pleased with her individual covered casseroles. Her latest present to her daughter was a huge lasagna dish. Marcia uses all natural materials in her porcelain, stoneware and paper-clay designs. The rustic-looking pieces, with their rich glazes, are all lead-free and food-safe.
