About Doug Thompson
I have always enjoyed nature, and am fortunate to live here on Whidbey Island where deer, raccoons, turtles, eagles, rabbits and more are coming and going around me every day.  Salmon are one of the iconic symbols of our Puget Sound Northwest natural environment.  For me, learning about all of the life cycles and habitats of our Northwest animals gives me inspiration to direct my efforts toward creating artwork focused on our natural environment.  Right now, salmon especially play a role in my work, but that is not all I work with as subject matter – either realistic or abstract.  Where water meets land – our shores of lakes, rivers and the sea – we see driftwood of all shapes and sizes and colors from large trees to tiny fragments.  I have combined shapes and pieces of driftwood with the iconic salmon (and other images) to create my wall sculptures.  I am also fascinated with copper / metal artwork, and continue to explore shaping and flame-painting copper to create a world of color on the metal surface.  I hope my artwork makes you feel good.  That’s what I want.

I grew up in our Northwest.  I have traveled around the world in various academic and personal pursuits, and embed those experiences into my creative efforts.  I am a retired Licensed Architect, and hold degrees in Architecture from Cornell University, and Environmental Design from University of Washington.  I have worked in a variety of mediums including watercolor, paper casting, pen-and-ink, line drawing, colored pencil, crayolas (my favorite).
