About Nan Leaman
As a natural fiber artist and designer, Nan creates one-of-a-kind wraps, scarves, and 2D frameable fiber art.
Much of her work has been derived from nature as well as cultures from around the world. The infinite possibilities of color interaction with fiber and stitch are her passion. Her creative process allows expression through color, texture, and pattern and the discovery of surprising nuances that occur when working with fibers and dyes. Nan uses dye and surface design techniques to create and color her work, using natural lightweight wool and silk or combinations of both. Many of Nan’s pieces consist of Japanese Shibori techniques: stitch, fold and clamp resist, and pole wrapping to create pleating and color variations, as well as deconstructed silk screen printing and “nuno felt”, a process that incorporates the fusion of wool and silk fibers. Nan has been interested in textiles and fiber her entire life. Four decades ago, beginning as a weaver and spinner, she started to raise her own sheep. This proved to be the beginning of her love affair with wool fiber. Although Nan’s weaving and spinning days have ended, to this day she continues to raise long wool, old English sheep breeds. Their wool is incorporated into some aspects of her work. |
