About Dave Somers
Dave Somers had a career with the National Park Service and worked at parks all around the country. When he was in Hawaii, he rekindled his childhood interest in wood turning, and has worked with a wood lathe ever since. He began using a laser to adorn his woodwork and then experimented with using it to cut delicate shapes and engrave linework into clay. He has shown his work at arts and crafts fairs, including the Alki Art Fair in West Seattle. He loves gathering with other artists and crafters, being creative, and sharing his work with others.
Dave utilizes digital tools to transform a photograph or piece of art first into black and white line art. He then uses a laser to etch the final image into clay or wood. The entire process is both rigid and free form, and the result is often surprising. He sometimes adds watercolor to the etching. Dave also works with encaustic or beeswax paint to express his ideas. He says, “These art forms are the result of a long childhood spent in the sun with crayons and a magnifying glass!" |
